Hiking to Potočka Zijalka and Olševa – A Family Adventure in the Savinja Valley
High above the charming Savinja Valley, where the crystal-clear Savinja River winds through green meadows and forests, lies one of Slovenia’s most fascinating hiking destinations – the prehistoric cave Potočka Zijalka and the scenic peak of Olševa.
The starting point is the small village of Podolševa, where hikers can park near the local church or designated parking areas. From here, the well-marked trail leads first to Potočka Zijalka, a famous archaeological site where remains of Ice Age hunters were discovered. The cave sits at about 1,700 meters above sea level and offers an exciting stop, especially for families with curious children.
From the cave, the path continues along the ridge toward the summit of Olševa (1,929 m). The hike to the top usually takes around 3 to 4 hours (round trip), depending on pace and stops. The route is moderately demanding but suitable for families with older children. For very small kids, reaching only Potočka Zijalka may be the better choice, as the cave itself is already an unforgettable goal.
At the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Savinja Valley and surrounding alpine peaks. Many visitors enjoy combining the hike with a camping trip in the valley, making it part of a longer outdoor holiday. Evenings spent by the Savinja River, paired with local food specialties, are the perfect way to end a day of mountain adventure.
Whether you are seeking history, nature, or simply a family-friendly day outdoors, the hike to Potočka Zijalka and Olševa offers a unique experience in the heart of Slovenia.
